Hawks Soar Past Mustang 12's and Defend Their Crown

By Bob Tobin

11-20-16 – The Mustang 12’s, following a dominating divisional playoff win against Hempstead the week before, entered Mitchell Field to battle the defending champion Farmingdale Hawks amidst frigid, wind driven conditions. This would be a game laden with vengeful undertones as Massapequa had fallen to the Hawks in the first game of the season, and were beaten by their cross town foes in the 2015 championship game as well. The weather would make it difficult for QB Ryan Heidrich to throw the ball as much as he would like, but Head Coach Jim Carew & staff had the team prepared and motivated to overcome Mother Nature’s cruel mandate. The blueprint for success was simple yet certainly not easy: control the clock and prevent Farmingdale’s talented running back tandem from accessing running outside lanes. And for at least the first half, that formula seemed to be working.

Massapequa opened up the game with an Anthony Matturro onside kick and Mike D’Alessandro recovered the loose ball to let it be known that the Hawks would not be able to fly without first earning their wings. D’Alessandro emphasized that point by carrying much of the work load in the opening drive, capped off by a sixteen yard touchdown run to put the 12’s up early. Unfortunately the wind made any PAT kicks more difficult than normal so Massapequa was basically forced to run for the extra point but were stopped just short of the goal line. Nonetheless, Massapequa had a crucial 6-0 lead.

Farmingdale began their offensive day at the Massapequa forty five yard line, and it was clear the Mustangs defense came to play football. But despite some physical tackling by Tim McGrath, Mike Valentine and D’Alessandro, the Hawks were able to move deep into Massapequa territory as the first quarter came to close. And on just the second play of the second quarter, Farmingdale found the outside running room they had been looking for and scored; the ensuing PAT run gave them the lead at 7-6.

The Mustangs took over at the Farmingdale forty eight yard line, and D’Alessandro, along with some tough running by Kyle Tobin, powered the offense down to the Hawk fifteen yard line. Once again Lightning got the call, and D’Alessandro struck the Hawks yet again, this time with a fifteen yard scamper that gave the lead back to Massapequa. Daring the winds to intervene, Coach Carew opted to allow Matturro to kick the PAT and he obliged, putting the Mustangs up 14-7.

But as we all know, clipping the wings of a Hawk is easier said than done, and Farmingdale sought to prove that point. Although the defense stayed physical – gang tackling at times – Farmingdale drove the ball into Massapequa territory and ultimately exploited the outside again, this time with a fifteen yard touchdown run. The Mustangs, however, prevented the defending champs from converting the PAT, and led 14-13 as the first half drew to a close.

The Massapequa faithful, shivering but undaunted, knew that the opening drive for Massapequa could quite possibly be an indicator of the game’s outcome. Indeed it would be crucial for Massapequa to answer the Hawks with an opening touchdown drive of their own as it was becoming clear that a shootout was unfolding. But unfortunately, and for the first time in recent memory, the Mustangs were forced to turn the ball over on downs at their own thirty two yard line, a dangerous proposition considering that these Hawks were beginning to spread their wings. Sure enough, Farmingdale took the first play from scrimmage straight up the middle and regained the lead, 19-13.

More power running from D’Alessandro brought the ball to the Farmingdale forty five yard line but the offense turned the ball over on a fumble, another rare occurrence for the 12’s. Farmingdale knew they had to take advantage of such a rare opportunity and indeed they did. Finding the outside yet again, the Hawks ran it in from the Mustang forty two, successfully converted the PAT, and led 26-14. But hold off on the champagne Farmingdale. D’Alessandro, behind solid blocking from the entire offensive line, broke a thirty six yard run to bring Massapequa to the Hawk sixteen yard line. Heidrich then defied the swirling winds and found Tim McGrath for a completion that gave the Mustangs a 1st & goal at the Farmingdale three yard line. Once again Lightning struck as D’Alessandro plunged into the end zone to keep Massapequa very much alive. Heidrich took to the air for the ever important PAT, firing a bullet to a wide open Tobin to make the score 26-21 Farmingdale.

To say the following defensive series for Massapequa was crucial would be a gross understatement. But there is a reason why Farmingdale is the defending champions, and they showed it by scoring on their next two possessions to hand the Mustangs a bitter and disappointing loss. But it cannot be over stated how well our boys played. They never quit and certainly gave the Hawks a run for their money. Hats off to Farmingdale for a hard fought victory. They are a well-coached and disciplined team, and not one Mustang player could argue with their high caliber of play and character. So it is with a small degree of pain we offer our congratulations to them. But we can also congratulate the Mustang 12’s. Although they may have fallen short in the Championship Game, this was absolutely a successful season and they have a lot to be proud of. This author has no doubt that they will be back again next year and that things will end differently. Stay motivated & encouraged boys, and congrats on a season well done!

• Johnny Yahner left the game with a broken collar bone. Reports from the Yahner family state he is doing well and a full recovery is expected. Johnny has been a key member of this team and a big part of the team’s success. He was sorely missed yesterday and we wish him the best.

• Special mention goes to Alex Catalano and Anthony Pereira. Both sustained injuries during the season and missed much of the season. But to their credit, they remained positive and very much engaged with the Team and didn’t let any disappointment they may have been feeling show. Get healthy soon lads…we need you both back next year!

Mustang 12's Declaw Tigers and Advance to Championship Game

By Bob Tobin

11-13-16 – The Mustang 12’s hosted the Hempstead Tigers at Burns Park in a divisional playoff matchup that would settle an age old score following a hard fought regular season contest that left the Cats from Hempstead feeling cagy and hungry for a chance at redemption. Looking to avenge that loss, Hempstead would ultimately leave the comfy confines of Burns Park with a bad case of cat scratch fever and the Mustangs would advance to next week’s championship game against the formidable Farmingdale Hawks at Mitchell Field. The victory completed the 12’s 2016 season sweep of Hempstead, and if there were any doubts about Massapequa’s 22-20 win on 10-2-16 against the Tigers, the Mustangs decisively dispelled any such notions. After receiving the opening kick-off, Hempstead took over at midfield but found little running room as they met heavy resistance from the Mustangs defensive unit led by Patrick Rogers, Francis Matranga and Peter Callan. Facing an early fourth down challenge, Hempstead took to the air but, despite a short completion, turned the ball over on downs to QB Ryan Heidrich and the Massapequa offense. Great Teams play big in big games and Mike D’Alessandro and Kyle Tobin and the Mustang Offensive line sought to validate that age old axiom. Tobin set the tone with a twenty six yard burst behind the strong blocking of Matt Birney, Mike Valentine, Anthony Matturro, Jonny Yahner, and Pete Callan, which brought the Mustangs to the Hempstead twenty six yard line, and D’Alessandro powered and chipped Massapequa even deeper into Tiger territory. Tobin bulled his way to the goal line, and D’Alessandro finished the drive on the next play, plunging into the end zone behind great blocking to give the home team the early lead. Vincent McDermott’s successful PAT made the score 8-0 Mustang’s.

The Tigers began their second drive of the day with good field position near mid-field, but once again were stuffed by a herd of Mustangs, this time with Anthony Matturro and Peter Wetter getting in on the act. The first quarter concluded with Hempstead facing a fourth and long at their own forty two yard line, and the visitors elected to punt. Taking over on their own thirty four yard line, D’Alessandro picked up where he left off on the last drive, catching a key twelve yard pass to bring the Mustangs into Hempstead territory. It was becoming clear that the Massapequa running game was beginning to tame the Tigers and wear them down, but Heidrich felt compelled to once again exploit their pass defense as he completed a key first down throw to Michael Maron setting up a first down at the Tiger eighteen yard line. The visitors defense tightened up a bit, however, and forced the Mustangs into a key fourth and four at the fourteen yard line. Heidrich again took to the air, this time finding a shoe-less Kyle Tobin in the end zone for what would ultimately be the game winning touchdown and a 14-0 Massapequa lead. Hempstead – and everyone else in attendance – knew they needed points before the end of the half but the 12’s were not about to give these Cats any treats. Solid tackling by Anthony Conetta, Dylan Wakely, Mike Valentine and Tim McGrath ensured the visitors would remain scoreless as the first half ended with Massapequa leading 14-0.

Massapequa received the opening kick of the second half and, despite some tough running by Thunder & Lightning (a/k/a Tobin & D’Alessandro) along with some nifty receiving by Jared Howes, and despite controlling the ball the entire third quarter, the Mustangs were forced to turn the ball over on downs for the first time all game. No matter. The final quarter opened with more of the same for Hempstead as the Mustang defense, led by Brandon Ortiz and Dylan Wakely, summarily shut down the Tiger offense and gave the ball right back to Heidrich & company. Driving into Hempstead territory and with the clock becoming a big problem for Hempstead, Heidrich bootlegged the Mustangs deep into Tiger territory and finished the drive off with a nice toss to Michael Maron for a Tiger killing touchdown behind the great pass protection of Nick Blitz and Gerry Gebhard, capped off by another McDermott PAT kick. The 12’s were in command with a 22-0 lead, and it was becoming evident that they would be travelling to Mitchell Field for all the marbles and to settle a score of their own.

However, and to their credit, the Tigers would not go down without one last roar and returned the following kick-off for their lone score of the day. Too little too late as the noise from the visitor sidelines was reduced to whimpers instead of growls. Any hope there might have been for Hempstead was put to rest as Anthony Matturro recovered the ensuing onside kick, giving the Mustang offense one last victory formation at Gillespie Field. So now it is time for the boys to finish what they started way back when at training camp. And to prove to Farmingdale that their loss back in September was more of an anomaly than anything else. I am sure the Mustang 12’s will be ready to roll, and for those about to rock, we salute you!

Mustang 12's Tomahawk Chiefs

By Bob Tobin

11-6-16 – The playoff bound Mustang 12’s visited the Mineola Chiefs at Tully Park in New Hyde Park Sunday for a game that would earn them home field advantage against a revenge hungry Hempstead Tigers in round one of the playoffs next week. Mineola presented a dangerous opponent in that they had nothing to gain or lose in this game considering that their playoff hopes had been eliminated well before the opening kick. The Chiefs would look to play the spoiler, but instead it was the Mustangs who arrived prepared, motivated, and very much on the war path. The tone was set almost immediately as Mineola fumbled on their first possession and it was Heidrich, the calm, cool & collected captain & QB, who pounced on the loose ball. Heidrich began the Mustangs first drive of the day with good field position at the Massapequa forty two yard line. Mike D’Alessandro and Kyle Tobin picked up where they left off last week against Long Beach, powering the offense into Mineola territory. Heidrich then tested the winds and connected with Jared Howes who made a nice catch to get Massapequa to the Chiefs two yard line. D’Alessandro took the ensuing hand-off in for the score, but a failed PAT kept the Chiefs hopeful.

No matter, the Mustangs defense forced a quick three-and-out and Heidrich & company were quickly back in business. Starting at the Mineola thirty seven yard line, D’Alessandro ripped off a sixteen yard gallop followed by a Tobin rumble down to the Chief two yard line behind the great blocking of Matt Birney, Anthony Matturro, Peter Callan, Jonny Yahner, Michael Maron, Tim McGrath and Michael Valentine, a spot on the field that was becoming familiar ground for the visitors. Vincent McDermott plunged into the end zone on the next play, and Matturro’s extra point kick gave Massapequa a commanding 14-0 lead.

Mike Valentine and the rest of the Mustang defense shut down the Chiefs again, giving their offense favorable field-position at mid-field early in the second quarter. A D’Alessandro second down smash mouth run up the middle gave Heidrich a manageable 3rd & 1, and he obliged the gift by connecting once again with Howes for a thirty eight yard touchdown catch & run. Matturro’s PAT put Massapequa up 22-0, and it was beginning to look like Custer’s revenge instead of his last stand.

Matturro’s kick off into the Mineola end zone produced a rare and impressive touchback, and the Massapequa defense stymied Mineola again as the first half came to a close. To say the Massapequa defense was dominant in the opening half would be an understatement. This group of blue collar brawlers held the Chiefs to an unimaginable 1 yard of total offense, perhaps the lowest total of yardage given up league wide for a half.

But whatever records may have been broken, the Chiefs made it clear they were not about to put up any surrendering smoke signals or offer any peace pipes. After receiving the second half kickoff (in a gesture of continuing Massapequa pride & sportsmanship), Mineola responded by taking an outside run eighty yards to spoil the defense’s shut out, “trimming” the score to 22-8. Nonetheless, Heidrich, D’Alessandro & Howes drove the offense to the Mineola twenty nine yard line, and this time it was Tim McGrath who caught a Heidrich pass, once again showing impressive speed to score what would be the final points of the day. Mineola deserves credit, because they never quit. More defensive pressure and gang tackling from Patrick Rogers, Peter Wetters, Francis Matranga, Anthony Conetta, Brandon Ortiz, Jerry Gebhard and Dylan Wakely* along with solid game management from substituting QB Howes cemented the win, thereby securing a round one home field playoff game against Hempstead. *Honorary game captain honors were given to Dylan Wakely. Dylan was himself a Mineola Chief last season until his family moved to Massapequa. He was clearly pumped for this game, and his enthusiasm inspired his fellow teammates onto victory.

**There are many reasons why the Mustang 12’s have been so successful this season and are hosting a playoff game next week. But perhaps none are illustrated more than by the pre-game warm ups the team conducts prior to each game. In particular, when this team arrived at Mineola yesterday, they quickly assembled in the end zone for a series of disciplined drills. It was clear they came ready to play, and even more so that this coaching staff has them ready to play week in and out. Thank you coaches for teaching these young men the important qualities of preparation, discipline, and sportsmanship, all invaluable traits that will stay with them for years to come.

Mustang 12's Kennel Bull Dogs

By Bob Tobin

10-30-16 – The Long Beach Bull Dogs visited the Mustang 12’s Sunday looking to play the spoiler against a Massapequa team determined to get back on track following a hard fought loss at Rosedale the week before. The home team wasn’t going to give these Bull Dogs any bones, and indeed the Long Beach bark would prove to be much worse than its bite.

To remove any doubt, the opening onside kick by Vincent McDermott & company was recovered by McDermott himself, and the Mustang offense took over with great field position at the 50 yard line. QB Ryan Heidrich set the tone of the game immediately by going to the air on the first snap, connecting with Jared Howes for a twenty five yard gain to the Long Beach twenty five yard line. And even though this was a picture perfect Halloween weekend day, Lightning began to strike as Mike D’Alessandro powered the Mustangs deep into Bull Dog territory, setting up a 1st & goal at the three yard line. Where there is Lightning there is sure to be Thunder, and Kyle Tobin promptly rumbled into the end zone to give Massapequa an early lead. Anthony Matturro’s PAT kick put the 12’s up 8-0, but Long Beach was ready to let the dogs out as their offense took the field for their first possession of the game.

Beginning at their own thirty seven yard line, Long Beach found their opponents to be nasty dog whisperers as the Massapequa defense summarily shut down the Bull Dog running attack. Tim McGrath, along with some aggressive gang tackling and a dose of OLB Tobin, set up a classic yet typical Jonny Yahner tackle to foil a Long Beach fourth down conversion attempt and gave Massapequa the ball back on downs. Starting with great field position at the LB thirty five yard line, the Mustangs soon found out that Bull Dogs can be a bit feisty and sometimes vicious as Heidrich’s pass attempt to D’Alessandro was neatly picked off by the visitors. Had it not been for the tremendous hustle of McGrath (who ran the runaway “Dog” down at the Massapequa twelve yard line) the score may have very well been tied. Long Beach managed to get the ball down to the Massapequa six, but a fumbled snap on fourth down put them back in the Dog house as the first quarter came to a close.

And as if to belie the clear blue skies, D’Alessandro struck lightning on the first play of the second quarter, taking a handoff ninety yards untouched for another Mustang score. It would be D’Alessandro’s longest touchdown run of the season, and quite possibly the longest of his Mustang career. Massapequa was clearly in command and led 14-0.

Long Beach’s next possession produced the same results as in their earlier attempts. The Mustang defense, led by Patrick Rogers, Peter Wetter, and Dylan Wakely, forced them into yet another difficult fourth down situation. This time it was Anthony Conetta whose solo tackle sent the Bull Dog’s back to their bench. Heidrich took to the air again, once more finding Howes for a twenty seven yard gain. Another toss to McDermott and some power running by Tobin brought the Mustangs to the Long Beach four yard line setting up a 3rd & goal. Heidrich sealed the drive with a nice pass to Michael Maron – the Wes Welker of the offense – who dutifully took it into the end zone to give the Mustangs a dominating and ultimately unyielding 20-0 lead.

The third quarter began with more team defense by Massapequa, this time with Matturro and Brandon Ortiz forcing the Bull Dogs into submission. More text book tackling by Conetta gave the Mustangs the ball again with Jared Howes taking the snaps as the fastest third quarter in football history concluded. Howes efficiently managed the fourth quarter offense with help from RB’s Conetta, Valentine and Yahner, and McDermott found even more running room to drive Massapequa to the Long Beach eight yard line whereby the home team kneeled down to end the game.

Mustang 12's Avenged By Jets

By Bob Tobin

10-23-16 – It was déjà vu all over again as the Mustang 12’s visited Rosedale looking to re-enforce the no fly zone they inflicted upon the home team last week at Burns Park. But the Jets were equally determined to spread their wings and avenge the loss in front of their homecoming crowd. Indeed the Jets did find the airspace that eluded them the week before, but the skies would be anything but friendly for them as the grudge match between these familiar foes played out. In the end it would be a game largely determined by time of possession and missed opportunities, and this game could have gone either way. But alas the rules of sport mandate that one team must win, and unfortunately the Mustangs would not be exempt from those laws. Rosedale appeared to set the tone by booting the opening kickoff deep to the Massapequa twenty five yard line where QB Ryan Heidrich and company got to business. The running room was tight yet RB Mike D’Alessandro managed to chip the Mustangs to the Massapequa thirty seven whereby the visitors were confronted with their first key challenge of the game. Facing a 4th & 7, Tim McGrath had a nice run and the Mustangs were able to continue their opening drive. D’Alessandro began to find his lightning groove, and Heidrich even got into the rushing mix. The windy conditions were such that the Mustangs needed to be able to move the ball on the ground, but Heidrich decided to test those winds with a nice pass to D’Alessandro who took the pass even further into Jet territory. Finding themselves in a comfortable 1st & goal at the Rosedale four yard line, the first quarter swiftly and surprisingly came to a close.

Just like that D’Alessandro found the end zone on the first play of the second quarter but the ensuing PAT kick by McDermott would serve as an omen of sorts for things that were about to come. The normally reliable PAT unit for the Mustangs failed to execute and convert, but the visitors nonetheless had a 6-0 lead. Rosedale began their drive on their own thirty six. The formula for the Mustangs defense was simple yet not easy: stop the bruising athletic Rosedale RB wearing number 34. Easier said than done, but thanks to some gang tackling and some solid effort by Patrick Rogers and his fellow defensive linemen, Rosedale was forced to punt and the Mustangs set up shop again at their own sixteen yard line. Heidrich defied the strong winds for real this time as he found Jared Howes down the left sidelines for a gain to mid-field. Maybe it was a metaphor that the game was played on the Jets home turf, but time was flying by and the Mustangs were running out of it. Heidrich again aired one out to Howes who dutifully went up and brought down the pass despite some very tight coverage, bringing Massapequa to the Rosedale twenty four. Heidrich spiked the ensuing snap to preserve the clock, but time expired as the first half concluded with Massapequa clinging to a 6-0 lead.

Rosedale opened the second half with a disciplined, methodical drive, determined to let their star RB will his way down field. And that he did with a sideline-to-sideline thirty nine yard run for a game tying TD. The following PAT was successful, and Rosedale was leading the Mustangs for the first time in over six quarters of head-to-head football, 7-6. The ensuing Massapequa drive gave the ball back to Rosedale on a fumble, but the Mustangs defense was not ready to become bogies for the Jet sorties. Forcing a 4th & 4 at the Massapequa thirty one yard line, the defense appeared primed to turn the ball over on downs for their anxiously awaiting offense. Unfortunately Rosedale had other plans and not only converted but scored yet again via a strong up the middle jaunt into the end zone by none other than big ol’ number 34. Barely gaining the goal line on the PAT run, the Jets were flying high with a 14-6 lead as the soothing sounds of Snoop Dog blared in the background.

With the third quarter dwindling, the Mustangs needed to strike some lightning and D’Alessandro obliged. Massapequa once again put together a drive consuming another full quarter! Consecutive runs by Lightning and few dashes of Tobin Thunder brought Massapequa to the Rosedale one yard line, where they faced an all or nothing fourth and goal. Naturally it would be D’Alessandro, who bashed his way up the middle to make it a 14-12 Rosedale lead with 14 seconds remaining in the game. It would all come down to a game tying PAT kick, but once again the Mustangs were not able to convert. Luckily D’Alessandro picked up the loose snap and found Tobin in the end zone for the PAT, but Massapequa trailed 14-13 with time running out. The following onside kick was seemingly recovered by the Mustangs, but the officials saw it otherwise and the Jets took the field to present their victory formation for a game ending kneel down.

The 12’s, still very much in control of their own destiny, need to regroup and prepare for a not to be overlooked visiting Long Beach team next week. Their post season lives may very well hang in the balance, and the team, following a post-game poll of the players as they arrived back at Burns from Rosedale, gave this author no reason to believe that they won’t recapture their winning ways yet again.

*Many thanks to Anthony Catalano and son for the game films they provide. This is a much appreciated treat for the players as well as their families and friends. Thank you Anthony! FINAL SCORE: 14-13 Rosedale

Mustang 12's Ground Jets Under The Lights

By Bob Tobin

10-15-16 – The well-rested Mustangs hosted the Rosedale Jets under the lights at Burns Park for a prime time Saturday night battle against their age old foes in what would serve as a barometer of sorts to gauge the going forward direction of the 12’s season. Coming off of a bye and following a for-the-ages battle against Hempstead prior to that, Massapequa entered the game sporting a 3-1 record and were determined to improve upon that. Rosedale of course had other ideas, but the Mustangs would look to reduce their jet fuel to fumes before the night was over.

Massapequa received the opening kick, and despite some minimal inside running room, moved the ball to the Rosedale 36 yard line thanks to some physical running by Mike D’Alessandro and great blocking by the offensive line (Michael Maron, Peter Callan, Francis Matranga, Anthony Matturo, Michael Valentine and Timmy McGrath). Rosedale undoubtedly had devised a game plan to stop Lightning, but D’Alessandro, as he has all season, refused to be bottled up. As such, Rosedale stacked up the line of scrimmage and QB Ryan Heidrich exploited that strategy and found Jared Howes wide open and alone downfield for a text book 36 yard catch and score. Just like that it was Mustangs 6-0 but the Jets were set to take off.

Anthony Matturo booted a beautiful kick to pin the Jets at their own 26 yard line where they began their first offensive possession of the evening. The Mustangs knew they had to contain Rosedale’s outside lanes to prevent their speedster – and sizeable – running back from turning on his jets. Forcing a 4th & 4, Rosedale went for it and did indeed find the outside corridor they needed. Were it not for a terrific one-on-one tackle by Anthony Conetta, Rosedale would likely have converted the down and may have even scored. Nonetheless, the Mustangs took over once again, this time with excellent field position. D’Alessandro once again dared Rosedale to stop him and moved the ball even deeper into Jet territory whereby Heidrich and Howes looked to go back to the deep middle ball well again. This time Rosedale wasn’t fooled and assigned two defenders to stay with Howes step for step. Heidrich’s pass was a thing of beauty, but Howes’ catch was even prettier as he denied the tight coverage upon him and pulled the pass in for another Massapequa score. Vincent McDermott’s successful PAT kick put the Mustangs up 14-0 as the first quarter came to a close, thanks to a great snap by Matt Birney.

But it wasn’t time to drop the confetti yet as Rosedale took the ensuing kickoff into the end zone. Luckily their PAT run failed, but the Mustang lead was trimmed to 14-6 nonetheless. Massapequa’s next drive stalled at the Rosedale 35 yard line and were forced to punt. Rosedale, at midfield, attempted a few throws of their own but found themselves in a 3rd & 15 predicament. But just as Lightning had been striking the Rosedale defense, Thunder clapped upon their offense as Kyle Tobin blitzed from the outside for a crushing sack forcing a very unmanageable 4th & 26 for Rosedale. It was unclear if the resulting punt was a fake or a bad snap, but either way the Jets tried to scramble their way to the first down markers but were summarily stopped by a pack of Mustangs.

Taking over with good field position again, D’Alessandro, with some receiving help from Jonny Yahner, drove the 12’s to the Jet two yard line and on 1st & goal, into the end zone. McDermott made it 22-6 and the home team was in command. Rosedale attempted to fill the air with footballs again, but more heavy pressure from Tobin and Mike Valentine put the Jets on delay as the first half concluded.

Rosedale opened the second half on offense, but the Mustang defense remained as stingy as in the previous half. However, a muffed punt gave them the ball right back with great field position at the Mustang twelve yard line. Some great pass defense by Valentine couldn’t prevent the visitor’s from punching the ball into the end zone from the one yard line, but a beautiful open field tackle by Yahner foiled their PAT. Regardless of the 22-12 Mustang lead, Rosedale now was within two possessions of taking the lead and that familiar feeling of nausea began to creep in amongst the Massapequa faithful.

Thankfully the Mustangs provided the ant-acid’ as they introduced some Thunder to the Lightning they had been inflicting upon Rosedale all game long. Both D’Alessandro and Tobin bulled the offense to a 1st & goal at the Jets six yard line where Heidrich once again found Howes for his third TD throw of the night (Howes’ third scoring reception of the game as well). McDermott – whose PAT leg is invaluable beyond words – made it 30-12 Massapequa as the final quarter was soon to begin.

The two teams exchange consecutive turnover on downs possessions, but the Jets were not ready to cancel any flights just yet. This time they found the outside running room they craved all game long and pulled off a confidence instilling 63 yard TD run to give the visitors life and hope. No matter. Tobin thundered his way to the Rosedale two yard line in a video game like run that would prove to deflate the Jets tires. And in an exhibition of Mustang pride & integrity, the offense kneeled down the rest of the way to seal a very impressive 30-18 victory for the 12’s.

*Honorable mention goes to the Mustangs offensive line, defense, and coaching staff. This was a true team effort making it difficult to recognize any one particular individual. Great job all around!

Mustangs 12's Tame the Tigers

by BOB TOBIN

10-2-16 – If Sunday’s game versus the Hempstead Tigers at Burns Park was a musical album, it would contain songs such as “Train Kept A Rollin’” and “Heartbreaker” to name a few. But what it really turned out to be was an old fashioned slugfest filled with smash-mouth football, one that had everything a football fan could want or imagine. And it was much more.

The 3-0 Tigers arrived confident to Burns Park to verse the Mustang 12’s, themselves a respectable 2-1. A Mustang is a tough animal to break, and the 12’s made it clear early and throughout they would not be broken.

The Tigers received the opening kickoff and began this odyssey near midfield. On second down, the fireworks began when Hempstead’s bruising Number 22 took an outside jaunt 45 yards to the Mustangs ten yard line, run down by a hustling Tim McGrath. But the drive was declawed on three consecutive downs of tone setting hits by Kyle Tobin, Mike Valentine, and McGrath. A fourth & goal running attempt was then promptly shut down by the omnipresent McGrath to give the Mustangs the ball on their own five. Mike D’Alessandro, coming off a dominating three touchdown performance the week before, added the lightning once again as he powered his way to the Mustang thirty five yard line. There’s no lightning without thunder, and Kyle Tobin left no doubt of that as he took the next play off tackle for a 65 yard romp to put Massapequa on the board. The ensuing PAT kick by Vincent McDermott gave the home team an 8-0 lead.

The Tigers were not ready to lie down just yet, as they promptly drove on their ensuing possession to the Mustang five on a nice deep ball despite tight coverage by Jonathan Yahner. The Massapequa defense held up with some nice run stuffing provided by Patrick Rogers, but on the first play of the second quarter Hempstead found the end zone on a QB draw, and following a successful PAT run, the score was 8-7 Mustangs.

This was already looking like a “he who has the ball last wins” type of game and the Mustangs needed to answer. Facing a forth & seven at the Tiger thirty four yard line, McGrath took the handoff and, showing surprising speed for such a big man, gained the yardage necessary to move the chains. D’Alessandro can out finesse any opponent, but he can also play power football and he proved that as he seemingly willed the ball down to the Hempstead eight yard line. The drive was capped by a nice third down pass from Ryan Heidrich to Michael Maron who neatly took it in for the score. The ensuing PAT kick by Vincent McDermott gave the home team a 16-7 lead.

Hempstead began the next drive on their own thirty five yard line, and despite some nice tackling by Anthony Matturro, the Tigers took the next hand off yard for a 65 yard TD score of their own. PAT successful and it was 16-14 Mustangs as the first half came to a close.

Hempstead opened the second half by recovering the opening kick-off, but great team defense and gang tackling silenced the Tiger growl and the Mustangs were back on offense near midfield.

Valentine, Tobin and D’Alessandro combined on offense and smash-mouthed their way to the Hempstead five yard line, and the fourth quarter began. And on first and goal from the five, Massapequa exploited the Tiger line-backing crew as Heidrich connected with McGrath to give the Mustangs a seemingly commanding 22-14 lead. Further compounding Hempstead’s dilemma, Tobin recovered McDermott’s onside kick and with only four minutes remaining, the Mustangs were on their way to sealing it with a clock killing, final nail drive. But Hempstead gave the home crowd good reason to keep the Tums on hand as they intercepted Heidrich on fourth down and, from their own twenty three yard line, completed a 77 yard passing play to trim the score to a very nerve wracking 22-20 Mustang lead. Running for PAT’s all game, the Tigers needed to kick this one to tie the game. But once again, as they have all season long, the Mustang defense came through, as Tim McGrath (who else for goodness sake?) blocked the attempt. McGrath limped off the field, but time was now on Massapequa’s side as less than two minutes remained. All the 12’s needed to do was gain a few first downs and kill the clock but they found themselves in a precarious fourth down situation and, going for the Tiger jugular, failed to convert as Hempstead intercepted Heidrich and took over for one last nail biting drive at the Mustang forty seven yard line, promptly driving into Massapequa territory from there. Unbelievably, and to the collective horror of the home crowd, Hempstead promptly took an outside hand off 33 yards for what was seemingly the game winning TD. However, an illegal shift by the offense brought the score back, leaving Hempstead with two more downs to keep the drive alive. Deep breaths everyone…the games not over yet. Howes and Rogers combined to make it fourth and five, and the visitors once again tried to exploit the Mustang exterior of the defense. Powering down the sidelines to what appeared to be a Tiger first down (if not a game winning TD gallop), Yahner made a game saving solo tackle to shut down the Tigers for good.

In the end, despite a heated game, cool heads prevailed as the Mustangs improved to 3-1.

FINAL SCORE: 22-20 Mustangs NEXT GAME: Saturday 10/15 v. Rosedale; 7:30pm @ Burns* *time may be subject to change

Mustang 12's Fearless Against Braves

by BOB TOBIN

9-25-16- The Mustang 12’s visited the home of the Bellmore Braves at Newbridge Park on a picture perfect Fall day. The air was crisp, the sun was shining, and the Mustangs were riding high off of last week’s 22-0 victory over Levittown. Coach Jim Carew reminded the boys about what can happen on any given Sunday. Message received…the Mustangs were all business and determined to not look past the Braves.

The Braves were determined as well. Receiving the opening kick with good field position near mid-field, the Braves, despite some aggressive team tackling from the Mustangs, found themselves in a manageable 4th & 2 situation at the Mustang 43. Going for it, the Braves nicely executed a pass in the short flats that resulted in a 43 yard scamper into the end zone. The following PAT was unsuccessful, but suddenly the visitors were trailing 6-0.

As the Mustang offense took over at their own 46 yard line, it quickly became apparent that despite the clear blue skies, Lightning was in the air. Lightning as in Mustang workhorse and leading rusher, Mike D’Alessandro, who set the tone with a big 32 yard gain thanks to gaping holes provided by Pete Callan, Anthony Catalano, Matt Birney, Anthony Matturro and Timmy McGrath on the offensive line. D’Alessandro’s next two carries brought the ball to the Bellmore 10 yard line, soon to be moved back five yards on a penalty, but no matter. Number 29 took it the distance on the following play, and some nifty PAT running by Michael Maron put the Mustangs on top 7-6.

But Bellmore was not ready to give up their brave faces just yet. The Massapequa defense was stuffing just about everything inside on Bellmore, so the Braves sought to exploit the outside lanes instead. And exploit they did on a key 3rd & short. Were it not for a text book open field tackle by Jonathan Yahner, would have taken the lead again. Sensing the opportunity at hand, however, the home team remained aggressive, even throwing at times. Once again they utilized the edge of the defense, and a WR reverse around left end found the end zone once again for Bellmore. Luckily the Mustangs prevented another extra point attempt, but they were once again trailing as the first quarter came to a close.

This was beginning to look like a shootout and the Massapequa offense very much needed to answer in kind. However, the Mustang kick return group wanted to settle things on their own. Especially Jared Howes, who made a nice catch off the Bellmore kick-off, and bolted down the sidelines for a quick Mustang response. Howes showed tremendous speed outrunning the pursuing Braves, and Kyle Tobin bulled his way in for the ensuing extra point attempt to give the Mustangs the lead back at 14-12.

The Mustangs special teams group followed up nicely with an Anthony Matturro kick to the Bellmore 27. Facing a 4th and 10 following a monstrous tackle behind the line of scrimmage by Matt Birney, the Braves went for it on 4th down with a deep pass that fell incomplete. Quickly Lightning struck as the Mustangs took over on the Bellmore 23. D’Alessandro, on the series’ first play from scrimmage, took it in for another score, and the following PAT run by Ryan Heidrich made it 21-12 visitors. But Bellmore wasn’t ready to take off their war paint just yet and drove the ball on their next possession to the Mustang 23. But just as lightning struck on their defense, rain began to pour on the Bellmore offense.

Rain in the form of big old number 66, Timothy McGrath, who pounced on a loose ball at the Bellmore 30. Lightning took the next drive into the end zone for a walk-in score. McGrath once again showed his athleticism by converting the PAT, giving the Mustangs a commanding 28-12 lead. Following a nice kick-off return by Bellmore and a TD saving tackle by Kyle Tobin, Bellmore pulled out there bag of tricks by trying a reverse-pass trick play which was summarily blown up by none other than McGrath. (All this despite relatively few Pterodactyl-like bird calls coming from the stands. Just imagine what might happen when Rodan really comes alive!). The Mustangs picked up the opening of the second half where they left off in the first. Only this time D’Alessandro’s running was complimented nicely by some shifty running from Michael Maron. The offensive line was dominating and the running game was reaping the rewards. Ultimately it was Lightning who feasted on the Bellmore harvest again as D’Alessandro capped some bruising running with a 26 yard TD gallop to cement the lead for Massapequa. Maron put the icing on the cake with the PAT and it was all Mustangs at 35-12. The visiting defense made sure the Braves couldn’t get back on the warpath, thanks to some nice tackling by Yahner and Brandon Ortiz.

It should be mentioned that although they faced an insurmountable score, Bellmore never gave up and fought until the final gun. But what deserves even more recognition is the sportsmanship displayed by our Mustang 12’s. Even though the hits kept coming from the Mustang defense, our players routinely helped opposing players up, offered pats on the helmet and encouraging words to their soon to be defeated opponents. The coaching staff further emphasized Mustang integrity by instructing Jared Howes to step out of bounds during a sure TD scoring opportunity. Howes, nor anyone cheering for Massapequa, complained. Kudos to all! FINAL SCORE: 35-12 Mustangs

Mustang 12's Win Home Opener with Pride

By Bob Tobin

9-18-16- The Mustang 12’s kicked off their home opener against the Levittown Pride and they were determined to make the home crowd proud as they looked to bounce back from last week’s season opening loss at Farmingdale. And play with pride they did from the opening kickoff and throughout the entire contest. Taking over at the Levittown 43, Jared Howes set the tone for the game with a nice 23 yard run to the Pride 39. Mike Valentine, Mike D’Alessandro and Howes again combined for 35 yards on the ground to bring the ball to the Levittown 4 yard line, capped eventually by a one yard walk-in by D’Alessandro to quickly put the Mustangs in front. The ensuing PAT kick by Vincent McDermott gave the home team an early 8-0 lead.

The Mustang defense set their own tone from Levittown’s first offensive snap. Gang tackling and swarming, the defense forced a three-and-out and the home team offense took over once again at their own 38 yard line. QB Ryan Heidrich opened up the series with a nice 15 yard pass to Michael Maron followed by a 47 yard TD burst by Kyle Tobin off right tackle to make the score 14-0 as the first quarter came to an end.

Once again the Mustang defense was dominating, highlighted by physical play from Timothy McGrath and Francis Matranga, forcing Levittown to turn the ball over on four quick downs. McDermott opened up this series with a strong run to the Pride 36, followed by some solid running deep into Levittown territory by Valentine and Jonathan Yahner. Unfortunately the Mustangs lost the ball at the Pride two yard line, giving Levittown a glimmer of hope. The visitors optimism quickly faded though as McGrath blew up their first play from scrimmage and forced a safety, making the score 16-0 for the home team.

The ensuing free kick by Levittown gave the ball back to Massapequa in Levittown territory, and tough running by Yahner and Anthony Conetta kept the Pride on their heels. The offensive line led by Alexander Catalano & company set up some nice running by slippery RB Anthony Conetta but luckily for Levittown, the half came to a close with Massapequa leading “only” 16-0.

The second half started with the Mustang defense picking up where they left off…swarming and gang tackling. A McGrath sack followed by some textbook open field tackling by Maron was overshadowed only by a heads up Yahner interception. A face mask penalty on Levittown gave the ball back to Massapequa on their own thirty five yard line, but they would be foiled by a first down fumble recovered by the visitors. However, and luckily, any momentum Levittown may have had was spoiled by a fumble of their own, allowing the Mustang offense to take over once again. Anthony Conetta burst through the left side for a nifty 18 yard TD run. The Mustangs were up 22-0 and all the defense needed to do was seal the deal, and seal it they did thanks to some aggressive tackling by Dylan Wakely.

With a true team victory such as this, it is difficult to assign any MVP accolades, but honorable mentions must be given to the Mustang offensive line and their defense as a whole bringing the Mustang 12’s to a 1-1 record.

Surely this team is in no position to puff out their chests or become enveloped in feelings of being invincible, but on a day when they needed to represent the Black & Gold with pride, they came through with shining colors.

FINAL SCORE:

22-0 Mustangs.

No Hawk Down For Mustang 12’s 2016 Opener

By Bob Tobin 9-10-16- The summer is essentially over, the beach chairs are being packed away, and the kids are back at school. It can only mean one thing…football is back. And back it was on September 10th as the Mustang 12’s visited the defending champion Farmingdale Hawks under the lights at their home field of Allen Park. This was a rematch of sorts of the 2015 Championship Game when the Hawks earned their crown by defeating this essentially same group of Mustangs last November at Mitchell Field. The Mustangs had revenge on their minds but unfortunately for them the Hawks had other ideas. The game started out on a good note for Massapequa as their opening kickoff to Farmingdale –– was recovered by Mike D’Alessandro to give Massapequa the ball on the Hawks 40 yard line. QB Ryan Heidrich and company brought it inside the 35 but the drive stalled on a failed 4th & 6 conversion attempt. Farmingdale picked up where they left off last season and ran the ball between the tackles for damaging chunks of yardage, capped off by a 50 yard burst by one of their two lightening quick tailbacks. The run would have been a touchdown if not for the remarkable hustle of DT Timothy McGrath who brought the runner down at the Hawks 1 yard line. Who says lineman don’t have wheels? No matter though as the Hawks FB plunged into the end zone on the ensuing play to make it 6-0 Farmingdale. A failed extra point (kick) kept the score as is and the Mustangs took over on their own 43 yard line. The Hawks defense remained stingy and forced the Mustangs to go three and out and punt the ball away. On second down the Hawks speedy running game was at it again, this time a 62 yard gallop around the left side to give Farmingdale a 12-0 lead, held up by yet another failed PAT. That seemed to wake the Mustangs up a bit despite three consecutive rushing attempts for minimal gains. Ryan Heidrich completed a nice pass to Jared Howes for a 33 yard gain and a first down as the first quarter of the season came to a close. Massapequa pieced together an impressive opening second quarter drive that stalled deep in Hawk territory. But just as the offensive was energized by Farmingdale’s play making, so was the Mustang defense fueled by that last drive as they forced the Hawks offense off the field for their first three and out of the game. RB Mike D’Alessandro began grinding out some tough yards as we have all become so accustomed to watching aided by a key 5 yard first down pick up by Kyle Tobin. Lightning (as D’Alessandro is known) powered through the Hawks defense to the Hawk 12 yard line, forcing a key 4th and 1. Heidrich gained the necessary yardage to move the chains with some tough outside running and D’Alessandro answered two plays later by bulling his way into the end zone for a two yard score. Suddenly there was life in Massapequa despite a failed PAT. The Hawks took over on the following kick off as time expired in the first half with the score in their favor, 12-6. The Mustangs received the second half kickoff but couldn’t capitalize on the momentum achieved at the end of the first. Once again penalties stymied another Heidrich romp for a first down, and the Mustangs were forced to punt. Taking over on the Massapequa 40, the Hawks once again used their speed for a first play 40 yard touchdown run to make the score 18-6. The third failed PAT for Farmingdale offered a glimmer of hope for the Mustangs, but time was beginning to become the home teams ally. Massapequa needed a late third quarter surge but couldn’t oblige, once again being forced to turn the ball over on downs. As the fourth quarter began, Farmingdale, well into Mustang territory, attempted to insert the final nail on a 4th & 13 yard play but were summarily stopped by the Mustangs defense. Facing a potentially game ending 4th and 1 at their own 35, D’Alessandro seemingly willed the ball forward with an impressive twenty yard burst, his longest run of the night. Unfortunately time was a formidable foe for the Mustangs, and one last 4th down attempt gave the Hawks the ball back as time eventually expired. In the end it was a good effort by the Mustangs against a talented and disciplined Farmingdale football team. The Mustang 12’s remain determined to get back on track in their game home opener September 18th at Burns Park.
