Mustang Seniors Storm Past East Meadow Rams

By Bob Tobin

Patrick Rogers and Harold Cunningham Batter a Ram in a Wet Week 7 Win

10-29-17 – The 5-1 Mustang Seniors travelled to rain soaked Plainview High School to face off against the winless East Meadow Rams in a game of lopsided expectations. Lopsided because the Rams had virtually nothing to play for, and the Mustangs needed to prove they could remain focused and not look past the Rams with the Rosedale Jets looming next on the schedule. The Mustangs also needed to gauge the depth of their bench as the goal was to take the lead early and rest as many starters as possible. Luckily both teams fulfilled those expectations amidst monsoon-like conditions fitting for the not so happy five year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy.

The Massapequa offense began the afternoon from their own 45 yard line and immediately rained down upon East Meadow when QB Ryan Heidrich, on the first play from scrimmage, bravely tested the elements and found Jared Howes wide open at the nearside hash mark for a 55 yard touchdown catch and run score. Before anyone could get soaked, it was the Mustangs off to a very early 6-0 lead.

The Rams difficult slog in the mud began at their own 39, and LB Mike Valentine immediately made his presence known along with Tim McGrath. McGrath stormed through to put East Meadow in a second and long situation, and Valentine followed up with a QB sack to force a very unmanageable 4th & 25 for the home team. Rino Monteforte along with Valentine blocked the Ram punt attempt, and Massapequa took over with excellent field position at the Ram 19 yard line.

Operating out of the shotgun, Heidrich orchestrated a nifty inside reverse to Mike D’Alessandro who took the ball outside for 7 yards, followed by a Kyle Tobin rumble to the Ram 3 yard line. Tobin took the ensuing cross-fire handoff into the end zone, and then caught the PAT pass from Heidrich after a neat fake-kick throw from the Massapequa QB, giving the Mustangs an essentially game winning lead of 13-0.

It’s Raining Mustangs: Tim McGrath and Anthony Matturro Open up Holes for a Kyle Tobin Touchdown

A very deep kick by Anthony Matturro made a difficult day for East Meadow even more difficult, forcing them to begin their next offensive series from their own 12 yard line. Solid team defense along with nice pressure and tackling from Liam DeVos and Dylan Wakely turned the ball over on downs, and once again the Mustang offense was on the field at the Ram 23. Tobin barreled his way up the middle for a physical 7 yards, and McGrath, in the backfield as a fullback, took the next play off tackle for his first offensive touchdown of the season. Apparently there can be wrinkles, even in a nor’easter! The weather, though, made kicking PAT’s almost impossible, but Massapequa led 19-0 nonetheless as the first quarter came to a close.

Once again Matturro booted the kick-off deep into Ram territory, and once again solid team defense led by Anthony Conetta, Harold Cunningham and Nicholas Blitz turned the ball over on downs for Massapequa. Bench depth anyone? Starting from the Ram 36 yard line, Mike Maron took over for Heidrich and talked the talk while Conetta walked the walk. The dangerous mini-missile made like a slippery eel as he took a sweep outside, broke a half dozen tackles, and slipped and slid his way into the end zone for another Mustang score. The following PAT was entertaining too as D’Alessandro alertly picked up the botched snap and somehow threw and connected with Tobin to give Massapequa a commanding 26-0 lead. However, and much to their credit, East Meadow returned the following kick-off into the end zone to prevent their day from being a complete wash-out, but the Rams still trailed 26-6 at the end of the half.

Jonny Yahner Finds Some Running Room as Mustangs Retain Division Lead

The second half was a complete team effort from Massapequa, who can enter next week’s pivotal matchup against Rosedale confident that their depth players can more than adequately respond when called upon. Great effort by Jonny Yahner, Paul Averso, and Patrick Rogers ensured that East Meadow wouldn’t be raining on anyone’s parade. And Valentine was an absolute menace as he seemingly was involved in almost every defensive stop.

Mercifully, the game concluded with Massapequa leaving confident they are ready for the huge challenge that awaits them next week. The formula, as stated earlier in the season, is simple yet in no way easy: contain and stop Rosedale’s talented RB, Adam Philogene. If that can be achieved, it is very likely the Mustangs will host a round one play-off game at John J. Burns Park. If not, their quest for championship glory may have to begin on the road, an option that is as desirable as another monsoon in Plainview.

*** Great to see Vinnie McDermott back on the field for the first time since his pre-season foot injury. Vinnie was missed and it is great to have him back!

**** Great also to see Patrick Rogers back in action after last week’s scare against Hempstead;

***** Thanks to Wayne Rogers for gutting it out in the rain and working the chains…you are a better man than we Mr. Rogers!

****** And last, a huge amount of thanks to the McGrath’s and the Matranga’s for providing cover in the stands for the Massapequa faithful. It would have been nightmarish without it, and thanks to you we are able to be dry and intense while sitting in tents.
